For Graduate Students

The Program in the Study of Sexualities currently offers no graduate certificate or coordinated course list. However, the SXL program sees the participation of graduate students as vital to fostering an intellectual community interested in Sexuality Studies. In addition, SXL offers events and resources relevant to graduate students and serves as an informal hub for those interested in sexuality studies, LGBT studies, or queer theory.

MAIL LIST
The SXL program runs a mail list dedicated to graduate students that posts calls for papers (cfps), job & fellowship listings, events, and other information relevant to graduate work in sexuality studies. We also use the list to find a graduate student to lead discussions or act as guest speakers. Open to interested graduate/professional students (non-Duke welcome).

To join, visit the mailing list home page at https://lists.duke.edu/sympa/info/sxl-grad

You can send a message to sympa@duke.edu with either the subject or body:  SUBSCRIBE sxl-grad

CURRENT STUDENTS
For a list of current graduate students with contact information and fields of study, see our graduate students page.

EVENTS & PROGRAMMING
SXL sponsors a robust schedule of visiting speakers, reading seminars, and panels. Recent speakers have included Jasbir Puar, Lisa Rofel, Judith Halberstam, Michael Warner, Judith Butler, and Jennifer Terry. See our Events page.

SXL also at times cosponsors student-organized events, for example, a spoken-word event by the group Sisterspit.

TEACHING
Most SXL courses are cross-listed. These cross-listings include courses taught by graduate students in a variety of departments — if your course seems relevant to Sexuality Studies, please contact Program Administrator Lillian Spiller with the course description. For the 2009-2010 year, SXL is interested in courses on transgenderism, sexuality and religion, and sexuality and science.

Budget permitting, SXL will also commission a small number of original courses to be taught by advanced graduate students.

GRADUATE STUDY
The Program Director can give guidance about graduate courses relevant to Sexuality Studies or help students think about potential committee members with expertise in the field.

COMMUNITY
The Graduate Scholars Colloquium in Women’s Studies is a coordinated group of graduate students from different departments, many of whom are interested in sexuality studies.
